iron-tipped spikeUp from the Depths of the Delaware River This iron-tipped spike, known in military terminology as a cheval-de-frise, was submerged in the Delaware River as an early defense system to protect the colonial ports from the British Navy during the Revolutionary War. Its donation to Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia initiated an extensive conservation documentation and treatment process designed to stabilize the wood and iron elements.
